The Cater Building artists launched the first Annual Community Palette Mural
June 4, 2011.

Raleigh: My Dream City is the theme of the new community mural at the Carter Building in Raleigh.
The Carter Building artists shared a palette with diverse members of the community on Saturday June 4, 2011. Participants were given the freedom to explore the painting process while being guided by resident artists.

The mural was sketched onto the vinyl canvas by Lee Ball and Tunde Afolayan prior to the event and color maps were on hand to aid the painters. At first some people were hesitant saying, “We don’t want to mess up the mural!”. However, they quickly learned an important fact about the creative process: there is no such thing as “messing up”. Happy accidents become a part of the creative experience. Within a few hours, brush strokes, splashes of color, movement of lines, and textures began to come alive.

It was a great day as more than 60 individuals, including children, families, artists, local politicians, and passers-by, participated in the exciting, fun-filled creative experience. The mural measuring eight by twelve feet was complete within eight hours. The finished mural will be installed on an exterior wall of the Carter Building.
Rick Bennett, a Carter Building Resident Artist characterized the experience: “What an amazing day at the Carter Building! You could feel the creative energy in the air. Everyone participating had so much fun. The mural is fun, colorful and captures the story of the Carter Building Community. I am so excited to be associated with such a talented, imaginative, accomplished, hard working community of artists.”

The Carter Building, located at 12-22 Glenwood Ave in Raleigh, NC, houses the studios and businesses of more than 75 creative professionals. An eclectic mix of artists, commercial photographers, design studios, boutiques and yoga are all located under one roof. Virtually all mediums are represented: acrylic, oils, watercolor, pastels, mixed media, photography, clay, and jewelry.

Studios are open to the public every first Friday from 6 – 9:30 pm and by appointment.

NORTH CAROLINA FOLK ART EXHIBIT AT THE CARTER BUILDING

Lula is a North Carolina folk artist born and raised in a rural community of Wolf Pit, North Carolina. Her childhood home was located in the middle of a cotton field, the early childhood experience of of the cotton field is reflected in her work. She also worked in the tobacco mill during her early years. She started painting at age eleven in the fifth grade, with the direction and encouragement of her special teacher, Mrs. Anna Wall Johnson at Ashley Chapel Elementary School. While at elementary school, she had a privilege of doing bulletin boards, floats, and some other projects that were available. Mrs. Johnson often said to young Lula “Stick with it, and one day it will serve you well.”

For a period of approximately five to six years, her art
took a slight detour, when she pursued a career in modeling with the Greensboro
based Glamour Inc. Lula was blessed with two loving children, Cynthia and Jack Jr. when they became teenagers, Lula’s painting resumed at a rapid pace. She created images of things she had seen combined with her life experiences and imaginations.

The setting of Lula’s first art show and many to
follow was in the closet of her job at Richmond Memorial Hospital. Quite often during her lunch break, she would show her art to different people. This led to her being invited to display some of her paintings at the Leath Memorial Library.
Her paintings have been exhibited in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC and several galleries in North Carolina.

Artist’s Statement

This new body of work represents my direct response to creative urges,
inspired by sounds and movements. I attempt to explore the powerful
elements in performing arts, hoping to create a visual poetry imbued with
the visual elements of space, color and texture. The need to capture the
essence of the spiritual celebration of life in various dance forms,
creative movements, and energetic sounds influenced the direction of this
current work. In other words, my experimentation with movements and
sounds has given birth to a visual celebration of human spirits and souls
beyond the physical realm.

My excitement and fervor to capture the vitality and spontaneity of movement has
prompted me to engage in the process of freely expressing my subjective interpretation of performing art forms. The seemingly dominant element of
color becomes an available template for me to facilitate the nuances of
the visual poetry.
My intent is to take the viewer to a certain domain where they can see the sounds and feel the movements through my work. If people can just hear the music and feel the rhythms of the movements, my work is done.

About The Artist

Tunde Afolayan Nigerian-born, North Carolina resident artist continues to make a significant impact through his paintings, and mixed-media expressions. He is a graduate of the prestigious Yaba College of Technology 'Yaba School' Lagos-Nigeria and University of Missouri-Columbia; MO.

Exploring color as the basis of painting, Tunde infuses spiritualism and symbolism in his powerful lyrical expressions. His thematic compositions captured in vibrant colors allow figurative images to adopt expressive, abstract qualities as well as representational styles. Tunde’s spontaneous, energetic gestures created splashes, strokes, and heavily layered areas that reveal the confident control of his painting media for clarity of expressions. His color pallet tempered with strong and vibrant hues exemplifies his powerful traditional African roots and aesthetics.

Tunde’s paintings are held in private and corporate collections throughout the world. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums in Nigeria, Europe and United States.

"INTERSECTION OF WORDS & COLORS"

Artist Tunde Afolayan partnered with Pasquotank-Camden library (Elizabeth City, North Carolina) on the NEAs Big Read program. While Big Read is promoting a new culture of reading, Tunde motivated young readers draw conclusions about what they read through the creation of a four-by-eight foot mural depicting scenes from Rudolfo Anayas Bless me, Ultima, a coming-of-age novel about a Latino boy in New Mexico who grapples with conflicting cultures.

DISMAL SWAMP CANAL: Underground Railroad Mural

This video is a documentary of the Underground Railroad Mural created during an Art in Education Residency at H. L. Trigg Community School in Elizabeth City North Carolina . The concept was inspired by the history of "The Great Dismal Swamp" and its connection to the 'Underground Railroad'. The students went on a field trip to explore the historic Dismal Swamp as part of the Underground Railroad Path to Freedom experience. North Carolina Mural artist Tunde Afolayan, worked with the students to transform the information collected through research into this powerful visual narrative which reflect on an important part of American history.

This Underground RailRoad Mural was created with 5th grade students at Hertford Grammar School in Perquimans County, North Carolina.
The students studied the history of the Quakers and Slaves in Perquimans County and discovered how the Quakers helped to free the slaves.

ARTS IN EDUCATION: Integrating Arts with Curriculum

Integrating Arts with Science

JAMESTOWN MURAL

This video "DREAMS STILL COME ALIVE: Exploring Virginia History" was creatred during an Art in Education Residency program at Broad Rock elementary school in Richmond, Virginia.
Tunde worked with the fourth grade students to create this mural which explores Virginia history and the first English settlement.
This project was sponsored by Gail and Ken Henshaw through "I HAVE A DREAM" Foundation Richmond, VA.
